Success Story: Laboratory Specimen Identification

Leica Microsystems Inc. (www.leica-microsystems.com) is a manufacturer of high precision microscopic vision and identification systems for laboratory environments. The Leica printing system is used in clinical and research healthcare facilities to identify individual and groups of tissue samples for testing. However, when Leica introduced the new printing system for laboratories, they desperately needed a software product to drive their line of printers for slide and cassette identification.

Challenge

Deploy a labeling application that allows operator input and data retrieval from a database before the print job is forwarded to the Leica printer to identify cassettes.

Leica needed a specialized software application to meet the specific identification needs of a laboratory testing tissue samples in a clinical and research environment. The application had to allow certain operator input from the lab technician and pull data from a database before sending a job for slide and cassette identification to the Leica printer.

After spending thousands of dollars and more time than was originally planned to develop this software application, Leica presented the software to their user group. The user group determined that the first software version did not meet original specifications and was basically unusable in the market.

Leica was left in a situation where they had printers deployed in the field but no software to drive them. This was a problem because it stalled Leica’s sales force from selling additional printers until they could actually print.

Solution

Leica contacted Niceware to see if there was any way that Niceware could quickly develop an application to enable their printers to output slides and cassettes for their existing customers.

Niceware presented NiceLabel Suite with NiceForm. NiceForm is a rapid application development tool that enables anybody to create custom labeling applications. Niceware developed a custom application with NiceForm that used built-in features and Visual Basic Scripting that included every feature that Leica needed to deliver to their customers. The application included multiple forms that allowed clinical and research labs to use the unique features that are required for tissue testing.

Niceware was able to deliver a working solution to Leica in less than 30 days. Currently, every Leica printer is shipped with a NiceLabel Suite license and the custom specimen labeling application for NiceForm.
